BY THE WAY by BRUCE
It’s hard to know how to best go about hastening the legalization of marijuana. It seems the more progress made by reform the harder and more heavy handed the feds become. When Obama was elected he said he would follow the science but instead is following ideologes. I received in this morning’s e mail a message from drug czar Gil Kerkowski(sp) representing the white house and was titled, to the effect, how we feel about marijuana.
They say it is addictive and causes respiratory and cognition problems. They don’t say addictive compared to what. It certainly can be thought of as addictive but that’s only because people like it so much. It’s like coffee, i drink it every morning, 2-3 cups of it, unless it’s a really warm summer morning and then i skip it. I don’t miss it on those occasions and i don’t have any withdrawal, just like cannabis. The best comparisons i have come across put the addictiveness to marijuana at about the same as coffee. The drugs that are most addictive are tobacco and heroin with alcohol not too far behind.
As far as respiratory problems goes, all drugs have side effects, and people and/or patients can judge for themselves whether any respiratory problems are too great. Forty years ago a friend who had asthma would take a couple hits when he had trouble taking air. Almost immediately his symptoms would subside. Marijuana helped his respiratory problem and it doesn’t cause cancer. Unlike the legally addictive highly toxic cigarette. Again, respiratory problems compared to what.
There are a lot of studies that measure cognition and marijuana use and i’ve never read one that said long time users, even heavy users, have any cognitive defects from its use. Compare this to heavy long time users of alcohol. Interestingly enough, hell will freeze over before anyone from DEA, NIDA, etc, etc, etc, will debate Ethan Nadleman, Gary Johnson, or anyone from LEAP.
Throughout this White House e mail medical marijuana was mentioned several times and always in a disparaging way.
They deny its efficacy and usefulness as though the sixteen states that have it were somehow misled, that it’s not real medicine. One of the common supporters in the various states’ fight for medical marijuana have been nurses. Consistently, nurse’s organizations have been behind this movement saying we need this medicine. Are we to believe our highly educated American nurses or DEA, NIDA, etc Gil Kerkowske is a retired law enforcement officer and Barak Obama is a lawyer as are most members of DEA, etc. People educated in the law and criminal justice are making decisions about medicine instead of people educated in medicine.
When Reagan left office he looked back and regretted not doing more for AIDS. Obama is yet a young man but there are more signposts all the time saying this drug/plant has the potential to be a very important cancer treatment. Obama is going to look back and regret not allowing any meaningful research to take place. Shame on him….
