UNCLE G’s on a LOWER I Q??????
Uncle G’s Corner
Topic: Lower IQ?
So here I am wondering to myself, what the next topic would be for my Uncle G’s Corner. A month went by. At damn near the end of the second month, which would be August 2012 for those keeping score, I saw this headline while reading the morning news online; ‘Cannabis Smoking Permanently Lowers IQ.’
I read the story. Immediately I sense something’s up. Carrying on with what I was doing, I then found yet another headline that was somewhat similar; ‘Pot Smoking May Leave Mark On Teen Brains.’ OK, now I know something’s up. It’s an organized attack.
This being the 19th edition to Uncle G’s Corner, I’ve had plenty of opportunities to express my opinion on the subject of cannabis. I don’t remember ever saying anything to the effect that cannabis would hurt your brain. Short Term Memory Loss happens when under the influence of the plant. Being a total idiot happened before they ever inhaled.
Cheech & Chong, are millionaires. No good for the image, but it’s still true. These guys admittedly have been smoking or consuming cannabis in one way, shape, or form for multiple decades now. In interviews, they say they have taken breaks away from the weed, but subtracting a few years or even more would still make them experts in the field. By knowledge and experience.
In order to have the success Cheech & Chong had, they must have worked hard…and they did. Toured all over the place. Numerous routines. I personally saw Tommy perform live three times. Two with Cheech. Dude was at the top of his game each and every time. I did not experience any situation watching Mr. Chong perform where I thought to myself; “Tommy appears to have less intelligence this time around then he did the last time I saw him.”
According to these news stories, frequent pot users IQ lowered over a certain time span. One news story stated an average of eight points lower then if that same person would have not used cannabis at all. Then the writer went on to state how important ones IQ was. It was a scare piece. Research based on a group of people over a certain time span. One conclusion was if one refrained for a year, the damage would reverse itself. Really? Chronic users are screwed, or are they? Can using in moderation make losing eight IQ points go down to a two? Is any of this shit even believable?
Let’s go back to Tommy. He has a new podcast that he calls a Pot Cast. Wants to rival Rush Limbaugh. I think it’s good he’s out there speaking his mind. Tommy’s seventy four years old. Listening to his Pot Cast, he again didn’t sound like he lost any intelligence since the last time I heard him speak. Unfortunately that was when Chong announced to the World that he had prostrate cancer. Something he’s treating with cannabis. The man sounded healthy to me. Not one time did he come across as a gibbering idiot from all those years of using pot. Case closed. Their conclusions, not conclusive. Words like ‘may’ and ‘could’ helped to define their opposition to legalization / decriminalization. It’s all bullshit.
One last Cheech & Chong example; memory. I saw them perform live only a few years ago. A whole evening of sketches, telling stories, and answering questions from the audience. They acted out some of their most famous sketches. I’ll end this latest Uncle G’s Corner asking one question. If cannabis use decreases one’s IQ, how were Cheech & Chong still capable, decades after making their debut, of remembering and acting out all those routines perfectly each and every night and not be affected negatively? Seemingly while also defying aging…carrying on like young men in the process?
